The power and influence of oral history since it became popular and affordable in the 1950s is truly astonishing. To hear and document well-known historical figures speak about events in their lives is one of those great gifts of technology. As voice-recording equipment became more accessible to average Americans, the same became true for generations of families who can now reconnect with deceased parents and other ancestors at the touch of a button.
More recently, the same is now true with video recording. With the iPhone’s introduction in 2007, millions now literally hold the perfect tool to provide priceless archive material to family history collections.
Session 1. Starting with an overview, we will review some examples of family history videos to help inspire our thinking. Dave will also talk about the iPhone as a camera and accessories that may help with video projects and discuss software to edit this material. You will likely find that much of this also applies to other smartphones.
Session 2. This session will highlight the art and science of interviewing. Expect this to include suggestions for setting up your smartphone’s camera, background, lighting, and audio options as well as tips on how to make your subject comfortable.
Session 3. The last session of this course will focus on the editing process and how to share or store video projects. This will include a demonstration of video editing on Apple’s iMovie software.
While the course will apply to both Android and iPhones, the instructor will be doing demonstrations using Apple products. Enrollment is limited.
