St Michaels is a charming town on the Chesapeake Bay full of history and historic homes… much more than bars and boats. Learn about its fascinating history from one of the St Michaels Museum’s knowledgeable docents as you spend a leisurely few hours exploring the “town that fooled the British”.

Settled during the Colonial era, St. Michaels was one of the most important shipbuilding centers in America during the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, a site of two significant battles during the War of 1812, and a major seafood processing hub during the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This tour chronicles St. Michaels’ rich history and informs you of the lives of typical residents of the area, including Frederick Douglass.

If you’ve not had a chance to acquaint yourself with the rich history of St. Michaels, now’s your chance!

What to expect:

Walk among the tree-shaded historical downtown streets of St Michaels. Let your imagination takes hold of the history being described by the museum’s knowledgeable docent specially selected for this Chesapeake Forum outing.  Walk in Frederick Douglass footsteps, see where his family lived and the final resting place of his enslaver … a man whom he sought to reconcile with after the end of the Civil War.
