Is the world economy recovering from the pandemic and how are countries coping with major challenges such as climate change, poverty, the war in Ukraine, conflicts with China, bank failures, government debt, inflation, migration? What stories do the various forecasts tell?

In this course we take a broad look at the state of the global economy, considering highlights of the International Monetary Fund’s October 2023 World Economic Outlook (WEO) and of other studies and forecasts from around the world. Are countries recovering from the effects of the pandemic and what are the major challenges they face? Are government finances returning to normalcy, is inflation under control, and what are some of the trends in labor markets and living standards? What is the state of the financial sector and are the US bank failures spilling over to international markets? And what are the effects of major political events, the war in Ukraine, and conflicts with China on trade and investment?
