Week 1: The Glass Key – Unlocking the Secrets of Hammett’s Masterpiece Dive headfirst into the enigmatic world of Dashiell Hammett as we dissect his seminal work, “The Glass Key.” Unravel the intricate web of mystery and deception as we explore the novel’s characters, plot dynamics, and Hammett’s signature hard boiled style. Week 2: The Long Goodbye – Chandler’s Noir Opus                                               Shift gears in week two to Raymond Chandler’s magnum opus, “The Long Goodbye.” Traverse the mean streets of Chandler’s Los Angeles and delve into the complex character of Philip Marlowe. Uncover the brilliance behind Chandler’s narrative techniques and his contribution to shaping the noir landscape. Explore the thematic depth and emotional resonance that elevates “The Long Goodbye” to the pantheon of noir classics.

Week 3: Comparative Analysis – Breaking the Mold                                             Our final week takes us into the heart of the genre, where we compare and contrast the groundbreaking works of Hammett and Chandler. Analyze how these two masters both adhered to and defied conventions, leaving an indelible mark on Detective Noir Fiction. Engage in lively discussions about the evolution of the genre and the enduring impact of these literary giants.

Sam VanNest graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in ’09, went on to get an MA in English from University of Oregon, before moving back to Easton in 2014 to write and teach. In school, he focused mainly on the portrayal and treatment of physical disability in 20th century American literature. This will be his third offering with Chesapeake Forum.

Will Dennehy

Will Dennehy

Will Dennehy has been telling stories for as long as he can remember. In January, 2016, he decided it was time he started writing them down and joined The Choptank Writers, a group dedicated to encouraging established and aspiring writers. Since then, according to Grammarly, he’s written close to one million words, maybe a third of them worth reading. He’s been devouring books since his dad read “The Lady or the Tiger” to him when he was eight. When not writing or reading, he’s playing his PRS guitar, painting, cooking, or sailing. He likes to keep busy. Will has a BA degree in American History, a MA degree in American Studies, and a M Arch degree in Architecture.
