Get an inside look at the process of launching a rocket into space and the research involved.

Visit an active spaceport and research facility. Learn how rockets are prepared, processed and launched. Meet with scientists and engineers preparing experiments and vehicles for missions. Wallops Island was involved with the early stages of America’s space program including the first test launches of the Mercury capsule that later sent Alan Shepard and John Glenn into space from Cape Kennedy. See the launch pads that have sent supplies to the ISS and that send sounding rockets above the atmosphere to conduct experiments. Come and tour the launch facility and learn about the history of the center and the critical role it played in America’s space program. Learn how current launches are conducted and what scientific programs are currently underway.

What to expect:

In this engaging program, you’ll explore the rich history of the space program on the Eastern Shore. Discover the inner workings of rocket launches, from the facilities involved to the intricate processes required for successful space missions. Additionally, delve into current scientific studies and stay informed about cutting-edge research.

PLEASE NOTE:  Participants will be required to show proof of U.S. Citizenship (Driver’s License or Passport).  Includes a 2.5 hr tour with two specialty area stops, a pay-as-you-go deli, and museum/gift store. Bring a bag lunch if you prefer.
