Katie will trace the history of food and herbs in Maryland from the earliest Native Americans, the early settlers, and the later immigrants, to show the heavy influence that foods produced regionally have on our diets – even our diets today!
The Native Americans were originally hunter/gatherers roaming to find food and water. The early settlers brought animals, seeds, and herbs and flowers. Immigrants brought the cooking of their native countries. There are surprises as to what was here and what was brought over. Herbs played a major role in cooking and medicine.
Katie will bring some samples to demonstrate their use in cooking.
What to Expect: You will learn what an important role food has played in this state. Where it originated, who developed such products as Old Bay, why the railroads were important in transporting food, and which towns or cities played a part in this, especially here on the Eastern Shore.
