The excitement and drama of the Senate Watergate Committee hearings in the Summer of 1973 is brought back to life with a combination of videos, anecdotes, and untold stories.

Marc Lackritz and Mary DeOreo’s first date was in San Francisco on June 17, 1972, the same date as the infamous Watergate break-in. A year later, they had both moved to Washington, D.C. to live together and work for the Senate Watergate Committee. 

Marc, 26, was the youngest Assistant Counsel, and Mary, also 26, was first a Research Assistant, then promoted to investigator – the only woman on the Committee’s Professional Staff.  Today, after a 50+ year marriage, three daughters and seven grandchildren, they are both retired, happily living on the Eastern Shore in Bozman, MD. 

Together the couple will bring the excitement and drama of the Senate Watergate Committee hearings back to life with their personal anecdotes and stories. Highlights will include the stories behind the drama of John Dean’s testimony, the discovery of the White House taping system, and the unanswered questions from the investigation!

Marc Lackritz

Marc Lackritz is a native of Columbus, Ohio, with an A.B. (Public and International Affairs) from Princeton (‘68); an M. Phil (Economics) from Oxford University (‘71), and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (‘73). He became the youngest Assistant Counsel on the Senate Watergate Committee when hired in April, 1973, in the midst of his last term in law school. His work at the Committee consisted of interviewing witnesses, subpoenaing and analyzing documents and records, and preparing questions for the Chief Counsel and the Senators on the Committee. After President Nixon resigned, Marc had a varied career in Washington, ranging from various stints on the Staffs of the Senate Budget Committee and House Energy and Commerce Committee, a partnership in a Washington law firm, and, finally, for the last 16 years of his career, as the President and CEO of the Securities Industry Association (“SIA”) and its successor, the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (“SIFMA”). In retirement, he has been an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Georgetown’s McDonough School of a business. Besides politics, economics, and public policy, his interests include golf, classical music, and lifelong learning.

Mary DeOreo

Mary DeOreo has a B.A. from Northwestern and an M.A. in Public Policy from University of Maryland. Following her stint as an Investigator on the Senate Watergate Committee staff, she was an Investigator on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (the “Church Committee”) and the Democratic Investigator on the Senate Judiciary Committee, before retiring in 2006. Her interests include reading, classical music, yoga and fitness, three grown daughters, and seven rapidly growing grandchildren!
