What do centuries of angels and demons in literature and the arts reveal about us as human beings?

For centuries, angels and demons have inspired artists and writers to explore the boundaries between good and evil, the sacred and the profane, the human and the divine. This course examines the origins of these powerful figures and how they have been portrayed across literature and the arts. Together, we’ll consider what these depictions reveal about our fears, aspirations, and understanding of ourselves as human beings.

What to Expect:

Through guided discussion and visual examples, we will trace the origins of belief in angels and demons through literature and the arts.  We’ll examine how these concepts appear in literature and the arts, and explore what these representations reveal about our understanding of human nature and cultural values.
