Join us for an inspiring adventure exploring the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman, one of the Eastern Shore’s most iconic historical figures.

This field trip takes us to the beautifully designed National Historical Park just down the road, where we’ll be immersed in the extraordinary story of the most renowned conductor of the Underground Railroad. Our visit begins with a ranger‑led welcome and introduction, followed by an overview of the hidden symbolism woven throughout the park’s architecture and landscape.

Inside the Visitor Center, you’ll find a powerful film and a self‑guided exhibit experience. Outdoors, the Legacy Garden offers peaceful walking paths that invite reflection on Harriet’s courage, resilience, and enduring impact. A wonderful way to spend the morning.

What to Expect:

The museum provides a unique window into Tubman’s life, her work leading people to freedom, and the ways her legacy continues to inspire civil rights movements today. It also serves as the starting point for the 125‑mile Byway that traces historically significant landscapes Harriet knew well.

If you’ve never been, this is truly a must‑see. And as an added bonus, we’ll stop for lunch at Blackwater Bakery & Eats in Cambridge on the way home.

Details:

We will depart the YMCA at 9am via carpool to be at the park by 10am.  Be sure to confirm that your carpool driver is planning to stop for lunch on the return trip.  With time set aside for lunch, we should all be back at the Y by 2pm.

PLEASE NOTE:  We are visiting the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center at 4068 Golden Hill Road, Church Creek, MD 21622.  This is NOT the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center on Race St in Cambridge.

If you prefer to drive on your own, please arrive by 10am in time for the Ranger talk and check Google Maps for the travel time needed from your location.

After exploring the museum, we’ll regroup at Blackwater Bakery & Eats, a popular lunch spot about 20 minutes away at 429 Race Street, Cambridge, where we’ll have two large tables reserved for our group — a perfect chance to reflect on the morning’s experience with new Forum friends. Separate checks. Ample street parking and a parking lot on the north side of the building. Reasonable prices, great food, and warm service.
