Every family has a story—come learn how to uncover yours!  This introductory genealogy class will help you discover the legacy left behind by your ancestors.

Many U.S. Citizens are descended from multiple American Patriots yet remain unaware of who these individuals were and the contributions and sacrifices they made to help establish the United States of America on July 4, 1776.  Did you know that 35 million Americans can trace their lineage to one of the settlers who came to America on the Mayflower? Even more have roots to the men, women and children who helped found our new nation in 1776.

Uncover your family’s story and learn how to trace your lineage with confidence in this engaging genealogy workshop.

Whether you’re just beginning your family history journey or hoping to qualify for membership in a lineage society like the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) or Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), this class will give you the tools and know-how to succeed.

If possible, bring a laptop computer or tablet with access to the Internet to each session of the workshop so you can work on your research while Wesley and a guest from the DAR can look on and assist.

What to Expect:

In this hands-on workshop you will explore the fun and fulfillment of building your family tree by tracing your lineage with accuracy and pride.  You’ll learn how to:

  • Create a family tree diagram starting with yourself and tracing backwards in time to depict all of your ancestors
  • Access online databases, archives and free genealogy websites to fill in the missing information on your family tree
  • Locate and organize key family records (e.g., birth, marriage, death and census records) as well as the many other sources of genealogical data that exist
  • Document your findings and keep track of your research with reliable methods

If you discover ancestors dating back to the American Revolution, this course will help you find a deeper connection to your patriot ancestors when you celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of America. You’ll learn to:

  • Identify and obtain the documents needed to apply for membership in lineage societies like the SAR or DAR
  • Understand the application process, timeline, and costs involved
  • Learn about the history, mission, and contributions of these lineage societies
  • Explore ways to engage with your local SAR or DAR chapter and serve your community

Even if your roots don’t extend to 1776, the skills you gain in this workshop will help you trace your immigrant ancestors and discover the countries they came from to become Americans—and a deeper appreciation for the people and stories that shaped your family’s past.
