Skipjack nathan 3

Join us for a morning on the Skipjack Nathan for an on-the-water experience learning of the heritage of wooden oyster boats, experiencing oyster dredging, and (hopefully) enjoying calm waters.

Join us for a voyage into the Chesapeake Bay’s Maritime Heritage!

Step aboard the historic Skipjack Nathan for an immersive journey into the heart of the Chesapeake Bay. This dynamic on-the-water learning experience, in partnership with the Dorchester Skipjack Committee, invites adults to sail through time, uncovering the rich history and evolving ecology of the Bay’s waters.

Feel the rhythm of the waves as you explore the evolution of wooden boats, from their handcrafted beginnings to their crucial role in oyster dredging. Witness the oyster’s transformation from a staple of early explorers to a modern industry shaped by aquaculture and restoration efforts. As we hoist the dredge on the Choptank River, you’ll not only observe the process but take part in culling the catch, uncovering the hidden world of the oyster bed habitat.

This expedition is more than history—it’s a window into the environmental health of the Chesapeake and its estuaries. Armed with impactful data, we’ll examine the delicate balance of marine ecosystems, the factors influencing their vitality, and the critical role oysters play in the Bay’s past and future.

Finally, let the wind guide you as you experience the pure joy of sailing, taking in sweeping views and the mesmerizing dance of local waterfowl. Whether you’re drawn to maritime heritage, ecological stewardship, or simply the thrill of being on the water, this adventure promises an unforgettable exploration of Chesapeake Bay’s living legacy.

Are you ready to set sail on discovery?  Embark on a voyage where history, science, and the beauty of the Bay converge!

What to expect:

The Nathan is docked at the foot of High Street in Cambridge.  Follow the signs to the Nathan or the lighthouse. We are the only skipjack around that has an “N” on our bowsprit and a gold ball at the top of our mast.

Our hour and a half sail will leave the dock at 10:30am and return at noon.  Summer traffic can be heavy, so allow plenty of time to get to Cambridge. Please plan your departure so you can arrive at the boat 15 minutes before we leave the dock. That will leave time to wind down from your drive and to use the public restrooms at Long Wharf located near the boat.

There will be a Captain and crew as well as two docents on board with us.  In the case of inclement weather, the decision to sail is the responsibility of the captain in command.

Appropriate close-toed footwear and clothing is recommended.  To be safe and comfortable, it is recommended that you wear sneakers or other soft-sole shoes as the boat can get slippery and there are many metal fittings on deck.  Remember that it is almost always cooler out on the water and there can be a mild wind-chill effect. Even on hot days, you may want to bring a light jacket or sweater. There is little shade on the boat, so be sure to wear a hat and sunglasses on sunny days. For your comfort, cold water and sunscreen are provided.

If there is a delay or cancellation due to weather, we will be notified early that morning.  If there is a chance of light rain, bring or wear rain gear.

**Note:  You may transfer your registration to someone else, but otherwise your registration is not refundable unless we are able to fill it from the waitlist. **
