Learn how to share the road safely with methods taught by the League of American Bicyclists
Safely operating on local roads and interacting with traffic by bicycle is not always for the faint of heart. Using this course developed by the League of American Bicyclists, Mark will prepare us for safely dealing with the unforeseen.
This course will include one classroom session, a second session on your own bicycle using parking lot drills of practical skills, and finished up with a group ride. You can attend only the classroom session if desired, but must attend the classroom session to join the second session.
This is a good course whether you are just wanting to get back on a bike, but are squeamish about doing so, or you ride year-round and could use some tips and skills for staying safe (and who doesn’t need that?).
What to Expect:
The first session of this program is three hours long in the classroom. There WILL be a break! In this course, you will learn to increase your safety when bicycling on the road.
- Learn to be visible
- Communicate with drivers
- Be predictable
- Control your bicycle
Mark will provide a useful workbook for each participant.
During the optional Sunday afternoon practicum, you will need to bring your bicycle to perform the exercises Mark will set up in the Y’s parking lot and then participate in the ride through town. This session is limited to 12 students riding, but others can attend and watch if desired.
Feedback from Mark’s last course with us:
“Great presenter! Would love to have Mark back with a basic tutorial on biking for those living in the area… reminder of the rules of the road, equipment, fixes you can do at home…”
“Great presentation. Wide ranging … from cautions/advice, to what to expect to selecting the “right” tour company/location/difficulty … and what to look for in a bike on these tour trips. This is an excellent resource for the CF library.”
“Enjoyed hearing about bikes, how to fit them, roads in the area and his experience with the need for maintaining proper hydration.”
PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a program of the League of American Bicyclists, a completed waiver form will be required. We will provide a link to this form for everyone in a reminder two days prior to the start of this course. Also, please note that both sessions are longer than normal!
