Dr. Ryan Alan Sporer is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Salisbury University, specializing in environmental sociology and social movements. His research develops a “sociology of escape”, whereby aggrieved individuals and groups utilize escape as a strategy to circumvent oppressive systems, foster autonomy, and create alternative ways of living together. His work focuses on off-grid housing movements like Earthships, highlighting how self-sufficiency co-occurs alongside pro-social behaviors.
