Dr. Ryan Alan Sporer is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Salisbury University, specializing in environmental sociology and social movements. He received his Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2018. His research develops a “sociology of escape”, whereby aggrieved individuals and groups utilize escape as a strategy to circumvent oppressive systems, foster autonomy, and create alternative ways of living together. His work focuses on off-grid housing movements like Earthships, highlighting how self-sufficiency co-occurs alongside pro-social behaviors.
