Join an expert osprey biologist on the Patuxent River in search of active osprey nests to learn about the Chesapeake Bay’s most iconic raptor.
Each spring, as ospreys settle in for nesting season, Greg Kearns heads out on his 22‑person pontoon boat to inspect nests and band young birds. This field trip offers a rare opportunity to accompany him on one of these trips during the nesting season. If conditions allow, it may even be possible to have a chance to hold a chick!
Learn more about the biology of ospreys up close and personal in their natural habitat along the Patuxent River in Prince Georges County during this field trip via carpool from Easton.
What to Expect:
While on the water, Greg will share insights into osprey nesting behavior, chick survival, and the ecological pressures facing the species. Where chicks are old enough to band, you’ll be able to observe the process—and possibly hold one. If older birds are present, you may also see transmitters being attached.
There will be plenty of opportunities for photographs throughout the day.
Details:
We’ll begin with a short pre‑trip briefing at the Patuxent River Park visitor center (restrooms available). The pontoon boat has a shade cover. Please wear typical boating attire and bring water, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. You’re welcome to bring lunch or snacks; there are also places to stop on the way home.
We will be on the water until approximately 4–4:30pm.
We’ll depart by carpool from the Easton Family YMCA at 11am. If driving separately, be sure to arrive at the Patuxent River Park visitor’s center by 1pm. Allow for about 1.5 hours to get there from Easton.
Feedback from Greg’s presentation as a guest Lecture on the Shore:
“Kearns’ presentation was comprehensive and very interesting. He even gave an overview of reasons for osprey population declines, including but going beyond the menhaden problem.”
“Very informative and timely.”
“Greg’s part of the presentation was absolutely amazing and I learned so much from his outstanding presentation including many visuals, charts and even videos.”
