Join us for an immersive two days into the fascinating and rewarding world of beekeeping. Led by local beekeeper, Jim Scoggins, this course will provide insights into the world of hobbyist, sideliner, and commercial beekeepers.

Beekeeping supports the biodiversity needed to sustain our natural environment.  Embark on this journey and learn how managing your own apiary can improve and sustain our diminishing natural environment by making a positive impact on the environment through the support of native pollinators.

Day One classroom topics include an overview of hive setup and organization, understanding the life cycle of honey bees, sustainable management practices, the significance of native pollinators, providing fauna, water, supplemental feeding, and mite-pest management to improve colony health and productivity.  The classroom instruction will also include an in-depth discussion on the essential knowledge and equipment required for successful beekeeping. You will learn about different hive designs, protective gear, and must-have tools to efficiently maintain hives. Our instructor will also explain and demonstrate beehive components, inspection techniques, and honey harvesting methods.

Day Two will take you out of the classroom and into the field as we embark on a fascinating tour of a working apiary situated just outside the charming town of St. Michaels. You will have the opportunity to observe fully operational beehives, gaining practical experience. This hands-on approach will allow you to witness firsthand the implementation of the equipment, techniques and concepts learned in Day One.

Throughout the course, Jim will provide personalized attention, answering any questions you may have and offer insights based on his experience.

What to Expect:  You will learn about the world of beekeeping, the honey bee life cycle, the critical importance of both honey bees and native bees to biodiversity, how to get started as a beekeeping hobbyist, the beehive components, tools, techniques, apiary setup, and management. The field tour will reinforce concepts and classroom lessons from Day One.
