In this Chesapeake Forum field trip to the United States Naval Academy, we will have the rare opportunity to tour the recently-built Hopper Hall, the Naval Academy’s Center for Cyber Security Studies. This 206,400-square-foot facility houses classrooms, high security spaces, seminar auditoriums, laboratories, and research facilities.
After touring the building, we will join Department Chair, Commander Ike Stutts’ for an unclassified briefing about the Naval Academy’s cyber curriculum. In the most recent Naval Academy class, 10 percent of Midshipmen chose cyber operations as their academic major. All Midshipmen are required to take courses in cyber operations. In the briefing, we will learn what the USNA is doing to prepare young officers to understand this threat and the importance of protecting the United States from what could be a very real and present danger. Importantly, his briefing will also give us an understanding of the future threats of cyber warfare.
After Commander Stutts’ briefing, we will have the opportunity to watch the traditional Noon Meal Formation prior to heading for lunch at one of several eateries in the ‘Yard.’ After lunch, there will be a choice of a short walking tour of the Yard led by 2022 USNA graduate Ensign Wells or a self-guided visit to the USNA Museum that is adjacent to USNA Club.
Once the registration quota is filled, instructions will be sent to course participants regarding entry into the Naval Academy and how participants will be guided to our meeting place at Hopper Hall.
What to Expect: Course participants will have the unique opportunity to tour the Naval Academy’s Center for Cyber Security Studies and learn about the current threat of cyber warfare and what it means to us as United States citizens.
Since parking is a premium in the ‘Yard’ and the nearby Annapolis streets, we will be meeting that morning at 8:30 at the Easton Target parking lot to carpool from there.
